Business Lessons from Children – Asking for What You Want

Ask and you may receive!  In this installment of the “Business Lessons from Children” series I discuss the concept of asking for what you want … the way children do it… and how to apply it in your business.

Hi I’m Dean Mercado.  As a parent of two I’m always thinking about my kids. And as a business owner I’m always thinking about my business.  So when those two items intersect you get another installment in “Business Lessons from Children” series.

What I’ve got for you today is inspired by, this week is my daughter’s seventh birthday.  So it’s really got me thinking about kids this week and just watching how they do things and how they approach things and how that translates into the business world.  Always intrigues me very heavily.

So what I have for you here today is the concept of ask and you may receive.  Ask and you may receive. One thing is for certain, if you don’t ask, you certainly will not receive.  If you don’t know what you want, you certainly are going to have a lot more difficult time getting it because you don’t even know you want it.

The idea is here that kids they don’t have to have a rhyme or reason to why they must have this.  Or why they must have that.  They see it, they want it, they ask for it.  Imagine what your business life could be like if you acted more in that capacity. Do you have to sit there and contemplate what yourself all the time and over think it.  Why do I really want that? I’m not sure if I really want that.  You know what are they going to think if they hear that I want that?  Who cares?

Kids certainly don’t care. They see that toy over there, they want that toy, they go get it.  Or they ask for it.  You know just like a kid that when they want something from you, they’ll keep asking, they’ll keep asking, they’ll keep asking and that one time that you bend and you give in, that’s going to keep them asking and asking and asking again and again when they want something else because they know that if they ask you enough they might get.  So again, ask and you may receive.  Think about how that applies to your business.  First it starts with do you know what you want?  And then secondly, are you asking for it?  Who might you ask?  Whoever it makes sense to ask.  But if you certainly if you don’t ask, likely you’re not going to receive.  Here’s to your success.
